Derek S. Raynes joined the firm in January 2013. His practice is primarily dedicated to plaintiffs in civil litigation, medical malpractice, and personal injury matters, and he has extensive experience in business contract negotiation.
Mr. Raynes began the practice of law in 2004 as an associate for a San Diego insurance defense firm dedicated to representing physicians in medical malpractice actions. In January 2007, Mr. Raynes accepted a position with Fletcher Allen Health Care, the University of Vermont affiliated academic medical center, located in Burlington. As the Director of Contracting and Revenue Strategy, Mr. Raynes negotiated reimbursement contracts with local and national insurance companies on behalf of a large hospital, a dozen clinics, and more than five hundred physicians. In 2011, Mr. Raynes accepted a position as the Director of Managed Care for the University of Florida and Shands Health Care System, where he was responsible for negotiation of managed care contracts on behalf of hospitals in Gainesville and Jacksonville, the nationally-renowned Florida Proton Therapy Institute in Jacksonville, clinics throughout Florida, and more than 1,200 physicians and other providers. Having spent six years negotiating on behalf of large health care systems, Mr. Raynes has a keen understanding of hospital and physician operations and business practices, and the environment in which today’s physicians and health care providers practice.
Mr. Raynes was born and raised in Redlands, California. His hobbies include golfing, vegetable gardening, and digital photography. He lives in Redlands with his wife, Rachael, who is also an attorney. They share their passion for live music, the defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, and raising their two children, Maxwell and Josephine.
